This was another fun one to do. It’s a fascinating journey from Pinner to accounting to 2% of all global record sales at his peak. I did get to Elton when we did a Radio 2 documentary and what amazed me was his memory and spot-on recollections. Given the well-publicised battles with drink and drugs you’d think he might be a bit… hazy. But no, down to the sleeve colour of Soft Machine’s debut LP and import price of the second album by The Band. Try and dig out the CD of his cover versions on one of those “Can you tell the difference between these and the original hits?” Well, frankly, yes, especially when Elton tackles ‘Young, Gifted & Black’.
